US Terminates Legal Status For 500,000 Immigrants

On Friday, the United States announced that it would give hundreds of thousands of immigrants weeks to leave the country.

President Donald Trump has pledged to halt immigration, primarily from Latin American nations, and carry out the biggest deportation campaign in US history.

Around 532, 000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans who immigrated to the United States as part of a scheme launched in October 2022 by Joe Biden’s successor, were affected by the order, which was made even more extensive in January of that year.

After the Department of Homeland Security’s order is published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, they will lose their legal protection.

That means that anyone who has been granted another immigration status to stay in the country by April 24 must leave the country, according to the order.

Welcome . US, which helps refugees seeking refuge in the country, urged those affected by the decision to “immediately” seek legal counsel.

The four nations’ process for granting up to 30 000 migrants a month entry to the United States through the Processes for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans program, which was announced in January 2023, was a result of the announcement’s (CHNV) program.

Biden praised the plan as a “safe and humane” way to relieve pressure along the crowded US-Mexico border.

The Department of Homeland Security, however, emphasized Friday that the plan was “temporary.”

According to the order, parole alone is not an underlying basis for obtaining any immigration status nor does it constitute an admission to the United States because it is inherently temporary.

Trump used a eponymous wartime law last week to fly more than 200 alleged Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador, where the country has discounted its programs for imprisoning both US citizens and immigrants.
