Updated: Tragedy in Karu: Six Lives Lost, 14 Vehicles Reduced to Ashes in Devastating Fire

The FCT Police Command has confirmed that a horrific motor accident occurred on Wednesday, March 19, at around 6:58 p.m., at Karu, close to Nyanya Bridge, killing six people and causing 14 vehicles to burn to ashes.

SP Josephine Adeh, the command’s representative, revealed in a statement released on Wednesday that the Karu Division had received a distress call relating to a horrifying incident involving a Dangote trailer loaded with cement.

As the trailer approached Nyanya Bridge from AYA, Adeh claimed that he lost control and collided with stationary cars in traffic.

In a raging inferno, the statement reads, “The impact engulfed fourteen vehicles.” As bystanders and drivers frantically searched for safety, there was a bang and chaos. The scene was quickly reached by emergency personnel who battled dense smoke and intense heat to free the trapped people.

Six victims were taken from the wreckage and taken to the hospital, but tragically, medical staff members found them dead while they were still there. The Karu General Hospital Morgue has housed their remains.

The inferno was contained by police forces, along with firefighters, other security forces, and brave people present at the scene, and normal traffic flow has resumed.

The FCT Police Command offers its condolences to the victims’ families and offers to the public that a thorough investigation is being conducted to determine the source of this disaster and stop future tragedies.

Public drivers are urged to drive with caution and follow speed limits, especially in high-traffic areas. Safe driving practices can save lives and prevent tragedies like this.
