Twiggy, a model, claims her northern father and keeping her slim and off drugs kept her.
Twiggy, real name Lesley Hornby, became a sensation at 16 after a photo of her with a new, cropped hairstyle was shown in a London hairdresser’s window. She has a “waif” look that has always drawn criticism in recent interviews, but she claims it is not because she is trying to lose weight but that her tooth hurts.
She continued, “It’s annoying because I have this perception that slimness is superior to everything else. I’ve even been blamed for promoting anorexia, and it’s all such rubbish! The only thing I have to wonder about these weight-loss medications is how long-term side effects side effects side effects side effects side. However, if they work, they do. At least I don’t feel as though I’m in the same firing line as I did when I used to in the skinny debate.
” I eat like a horse. Always have done. My family was a thin Northerner, and my genes are the same. Food is something I love but it bothers me.
The model was speaking with You magazine to promote Sadie Frost’s upcoming full-length documentary Twiggy, which is scheduled to be released next month.
It will show how she burst onto the modelling scene as a teenager, being on the cover of US Vogue aged 17 and earning around £1, 500 a day – which is £14, 500 in today’s money). She then pursued a career in singing and acting. She claimed that she was “so proud” of her parents, Nell, and Norman, when they were recognized as Dames in 2019.
Asked whether she was ever tempted to join in with the sex and drugs of the 60s she added:” No, that’s my dad’s influence. He was from Bolton, Lancashire. A lovely man. Steady, reliable and always family first. I’m the same. I’ve seen a lot of people turn out of control as a result of their fame, but I wanted to be there and enjoy it.
Twiggy has also co-authored 17 collections with Marks & Spencer, participated in a lucrative partnership with Home Shopping Network in the US from 2005 to 2008, and was a judge on America’s Next Top Model from 2005 to 2008.
She is married to actor and director Leigh Lawson and their family is made up of Leigh’s son Jason, 48, from his relationship with Hayley Mills, her daughter Carly, 46, and their combined five grandchildren. She now enjoys working as much as her family at age 75. Twiggy said:” Carly and Jason have grown up like brother and sister.
“I don’t think there is any better feeling than a four-year-old charging through the school gates and crashing into your knees shouting, ‘ I’m hungry! ‘ I absolutely love being a granny”.
