Turkish court jails Istanbul Mayor pending trial on corruption charges

Ekrem Imamoglu, mayor of Istanbul, has been ordered to spend time in jail prior to a trial for corruption charges. Imamoglu is a formidable adversary of President Erdogan, who denies the accusations. His arrest led to a wave of protests. The courts, according to the government, performed their own work.
