As Mele Kyari, the group’s CEO, celebrates his 60th birthday on Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu has praised his virtues.
The National Nigerian Petroleum Company Limited’s CEO, Kyari, previously described how he rose from being a student at Almajiri to becoming the number one man at the company.
“I am incredibly appreciative of my country for giving me the opportunity to rise from a student in Almajiri (Tsangaya) and become the CEO of Africa’s largest energy company.
I’m particularly grateful for Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s extraordinary privilege to be their successor to the NNPC and their pioneering CEO.
The profoundly eventful life I lived to this date, walking through good and bad times, struggles and triumphs, pains and joys, successes and failures, and many more, Allah’s sufficiency will not be able to explain.
He wrote some words on his X handle, “At this milestone, I feel the obligation to serve with even greater conviction and with elevated expectation of eternal recompense so deeply gratifying.”
In a statement released late on Tuesday, Tinubu praised Kyari for his diligence in turning the NNPCL. He also praised his Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who was also present.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu congratulates Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Group Chief Executive Officer Mallam Mele Kolo Kyari on January 8th, marking his 60th birthday.
“The President commends Kyari’s diligence in transforming the NNPCL into a profitable organisation. The President recalls that the NNPCL under Kyari’s leadership has made notable progress, including the resuscitation of two refineries, the expansion of domestic natural gas consumption, and the increase in oil production to 1.8 million CH barrels per day.
The President applauds Kyari’s commitment to the field and the professionalism he has displayed throughout his distinguished career at NNPC, OPEC, and NNPCL’s inaugural group chief executive officer.
The Renewed Hope Agenda’s ideals are exemplified by Kyari, who is a shining example of them. President Tinubu praised his commitment to expanding opportunities and ensuring the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s energy sector.
