The inside story on how Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams fell in love after meeting on the set of the 2005 film Brokeback Mountain

Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams dated for three years before splitting in 2007, just five months before his tragic overdose death.

The former couple met on the set of the 2005 film Brokeback Mountain and their romance blossomed after Heath helped Michelle when she injured herself on set.

While filming a scene for the movie,  Michelle twisted her knee and was crying at the bottom of the hill in pain.

Brokeback Mountain screenwriter Diana Ossana told Out Magazine: ‘She’d twisted her knee, and we had to call someone to take her to the hospital. Heath was not about to let her go alone, and as he was getting into the vehicle with her he was smoothing her hair back.’

‘I remember him looking at her, and she looking up at him with these wide eyes. She was almost startled by the attention he was giving her, but you could see it every day from thereon.’

Diana explained: ‘For him it was truly love at first sight. He was so taken with her.’

Heath and Michelle started dating and in less than one year they announced they were expecting a daughter together.

The couple welcomed daughter Matilda, their only child, in October 2005.

Heath died in a New York City apartment on January 22, 2008, after accidentally overdosing following months of physical and mental exhaustion.

'I remember [Heath] looking at her, and she looking up at him with these wide eyes. She was almost startled by the attention he was giving her, but you could see it every day from thereon. For him it was truly love at first sight. He was so taken with her,' Brokeback Mountain screenwriter Diana Ossana said

Reportedly a drug user on and off for years, things came to a head when he was juggling too many films – including his last role The Dark Knight – on very little sleep and he started relying on various cocktails of prescriptions to shut his mind off.

‘I couldn’t stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going,’ he told The New York Times in an interview in November – just two months before he died at the age of 28.

He was found to have taken a lethal combination of six drugs: two types of narcotics, two types of anti-anxiety medicine and two types of sleep medicine.
