They must also compete in mental and physical challengs with the winner of the American version taking home a prize of $1million.

BBC One and BBC iPlayer will welcome 16 hour-long episodes of the physical and psychological gameshow.

A collection of 20 players selected from across the UK will be divided into two ‘tribes’ and go head-to-head in a range of challenges while marooned in a tropical location to be crowned the Ultimate Survivor.

Following a number of eliminations that will take place at the iconic tribal council, the tribes will eventually merge before one person takes away a cash prize and proves that they have what it takes to be the Ultimate Survivor.

Comeback: Applications are now open for those hoping to take part at survivoruk.com and will close on February 23

Celebrating 25 years this year, Survivor is one of the most watched reality entertainment formats around the world and has gone on to be ranked as the number one ‘Best Reality Show of All Time’ by Variety Magazine.

To date there have been 50 versions of the series commissioned around the world, first airing in Sweden in 1997. The USA’s version aired by CBS will soon be airing its 43rd series.

Survivors was axed by ITV after its second series in 2002 failed to increase its viewership.

Soon after in August 2002, the broadcaster introduced I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! which had many similarities to Survivor, welcoming huge success and massive ratings.

Natalka Znak, CEO Remarkable Entertainment says; ‘Survivor is ‘the greatest gameshow on earth’ for a reason – it has everything – reality, adventure, drama, and the ultimate game.

‘I can’t wait to be boots on the ground, working with Paul Osborne, Stephen Lovelock and the fantastic team at Remarkable to make this epic series for the BBC.’

Survivor is a Remarkable Entertainment, a Banijay UK company, production for BBC One and BBC iPlayer and was commissioned by Kate Phillips in her capacity as Director of Entertainment Commissioning.
