The praise Dame Anna Wintour gave him has been revealed by Steve Coogan.

Brian and Maggie, a Channel 4 drama last week, received critical acclaim. He won’t be misled about the role in which he will ultimately be remembered, though. In fact, Steve admits, he’s spent so long playing Alan Partridge, he even catches himself thinking in character sometimes…. a phenomenon he’s likens to a medical “condition”.

After years of trying to escape his Norwich-loving DJ alter ego, he is at least at peace with his legacy today. Speaking about Partidge, he says: “There was a time when I felt saddled with it. So, when I do Partridge, I do it through choice. Not because I must.

That might be the case with projects for TV and podcasts. However, he has less control over the strangest of Alan’s appearances in his head. He says, “I’m on the train and I’ll laugh at myself as a Partridge comes into my head and puts it on my phone.” Or “Oh, what would Alan say about that, I’ll look in a store window and think about it”? ‘. I’m still doing]Alan] now, 30 years later, so it’s like a condition now. There’d be an acronym for it, you know”.

Steve Coogan has revealed details about his recognizable character (PA).

The actor admits that he’ll be remembered for his role in Trevor Leighton’s film Alan Partridge.

Steve’s next Partridge outing will be in his new TV series, How Are You? – which features Alan asking people about their mental health while he is traveling and doing it, typical of a tactless person. The first Alan Partridge production in four years. On the newest episode of the Dish from Waitrose podcast featuring Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett MBE, which is out tomorrow, Steve explains that Alan is trying to jump on the mental health bandwagon. He is aware that when he discusses a significant issue, he will be able to return to television.

The production of the show is currently in progress, and it should be finished “in a few months.” Away from Alan, Steve, 59, has certainly been busy. He’s getting used to the routine performances in his West End production of Dr. Strangelove right now. It’s a bit of a culture shock for me, he says, but doing the show is a good discipline, regardless of whether you’re inspired to do it or not. “So, you’ve got to garner all this enthusiasm. So, I walk around backstage singing out loud, ‘ We’re going to do a show, even though none of us want to'”.

Apart from being the show’s unofficial cheerleader, he’s also humble…. “There’s a big cast, you know, it’s not just me”, says the dad-of-one. “I’ve got to give them credit, you know. I am part of an ensemble”. After a pause, he adds: “I just do most of the heavy lifting”.

One imagines his tongue is properly in his cheek, otherwise it’s going to be chilly when he’s next backstage. Steve is a true triple threat, having just received critical acclaim for the Channel 4 drama Brian and Maggie, which centers on the real-life friendship between political interviewer Brian Walden and then-prime minister Margaret Thatcher. When he had to choose between protecting his friend in a live TV interview and choosing the jugular, their friendship abruptly ended. Thatcher, who ultimately left Number 10 in 1991, was ultimately regarded as the end of her career as he chose the second option.

Steve’s opinion of the Iron Lady has somewhat changed since playing Brian. You could tell what Margaret Thatcher’s point of view was when you looked back through history, he says. Nothing was wistful or unfavorable. Uh, she didn’t try and please all the people all the time, by, she wasn’t risk averse, like a lot of modern politicians are. “

The show is still available for All 4 subscribers. Yet talking of people who don’t try to please others…. It certainly sums up Steve’s relationship with his peer and co-star of The Trip, Rob Brydon. Rob was the last to appear on our screens in the Christmas Day Gavin &amp, Stacey finale, but both have enjoyed great success elsewhere.

However, putting two dry wits to play versions of themselves together for a show was always problematic. And Steve acknowledges that, in spite of a promise they made each other, he frequently took the ribbing too far. Rob and I, we had a gentleman’s agreement that we were allowed to take the p**s out of each other and risk upsetting each other, “says Steve”. Because you know what buttons to press to end someone up if you really want to needle them and you know how to do it.

“Sometimes it would get quite frosty. Probably on my part, you know. And I’d go, ‘ You want to go there? You want to go there? Do you want me to go there? Should we do that? Are we, are we doing that? ‘ But we like each other really”. Steve also acknowledges one of his proudest parenting victories with Nick and Angela after challenging his adult daughter Clare for her opinions on his clothes.

There isn’t anything more appreciative than an Anna Wintour compliment, after all. “My daughter always says that I’m sartorially challenged. When I dress, I go, ‘ Do you think what I’m wearing is okay? ‘ And she’ll go, ‘ It’s a bit fifty shades of beige, ‘” says the Night At the Museum star.

Anna texted him the following day after he won the 2013 Best Adapted Screenplay Award for Philomena, saying that she had met him while working on a US Vogue shoot. “I got a text from Anna Wintour saying, ‘ Great speech. Good suit. ‘ I showed it to my daughter”, recalls Steve, who’s had Clare after a short relationship with her lawyer mother. “I said, ‘ Anna Wintour says, Great speech. Good suit! ‘ And she, my daughter said, ‘ It didn’t say, Good speech. Great suit. ‘” It appears that Steve is not the only one who has patience for his dearly beloved Alan.

Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett MBE join Steve Coogan on the newest episode of Waitrose’s Dish. The first episode is available tomorrow, Wednesday, February 5, from all podcast providers.
