One of the stars of Netflix smash-hit, Squid Game, has died three months after being diagnosed with cancer.

Lee Joo-Sil played Park Mal Soon, mother of Hwang Jun Ho (Wi Ha Joon) and stepmother of Hwang In Ho (Lee Byung Hun) in the second season of the Netflix smash-hit. The 81-year-old actress, who was diagnosed with stomach cancer in November, passed away peacefully at her family home in Uijeongbu, according to the national newspaper The Chosun Ilbo.

Following the actress’ passing, Squid Game fans have flocked to social media, posting the following message on X, formerly Twitter: “Omgggggg noooo my favorite grandma may her soul rest in peace.” Another said: “May her soul rest in peace” while a third shared: “She was such a phenomenal actress. Rest in peace”. Meanwhile, a fourth added: ‘ Veteran actress Lee Joo-Sil has sadly passed away after battling stomach cancer. Known for her role in Squid Game 2 and decades of iconic performances, she leaves behind a lasting legacy. May she rest in peace. “

The Korean drama star received a month to live after being previously diagnosed with breast cancer 30 years ago. Lee reportedly received the all-clear after fighting the disease for 13 years, according to the outlet. However, in November, she was diagnosed with stomach cancer during a check-up. A funeral service will be held on February 5 at Shinchon Severance Hospital in South Korea.

The actress began her acting and acting careers in 1964, and she quickly gained notoriety as both. She is best known for her roles in the South Korean horror film Train to Busan and the Korean TV series The Uncanny Counter.

Since its release on December 26, Squid Games’ second series has received more than 126.2 million views, breaking the previous record for the most views by a Netflix series in this time frame. Much to the delight of the show’s devoted fans, a third season has now been confirmed by the streaming service.
