In response to inquiries into the most deadly air disaster to occur on South Korean soil, police have searched Muan International Airport, Jeju Air’s offices, and a regional aviation organization.
According to officials, the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency conducted the “search and seizure operation” at the three locations on Thursday morning.
The raids come as aviation authorities, including officials from the United States, are probing the cause of the deadly crash of Jeju Air Flight 2216 on Sunday, which killed 179 of 181 people on board.
The initial data was taken from one of the Boeing 737-800’s two black boxes, according to South Korean authorities, who announced on Wednesday that the damage it had caused to the aircraft was being analysed in the US.
Officials in South Korea have begun an extensive investigation into the country’s entire airline operations as well as an inspection of all Boeing 737-800 aircraft currently in use.
Choi Sang-mok, the acting president of South Korea, stated on Thursday that if any issues with the aircraft model were discovered during inspections, immediate action must be taken.
“As there’s great public concern about the same aircraft model involved in the accident, the transport ministry and relevant organisations must conduct a thorough inspection of operation maintenance, education, and training”, , Choi , said.
A collision with birds, mechanical failure, and the presence of a hardened embankment less than 300 meters (328 yards) from the runway have all been brought up by aviation experts.
The Boeing 737-800 belly-landed on the runway, without its landing gear deployed, shortly after the pilot reported a bird strike to air traffic control, before skidding into a concrete embankment and exploding into flames.
