Sinner’s Laureus award nomination withdrawn after ban

After receiving a three-month doping ban, Jannik Sinner’s nomination for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award has been voided.
Following a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency regarding his two positive drug tests last year, the world no. 1 accepted a three-month ban from tennis earlier this month.
The 23-year-old Italian, who won the Australian Open in January, is suspended from 9 February until 4 May.
The Laureus World Sports Academy has decided that Jannik Sinner’s nomination for this year’s Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award will be withdrawn, according to chairman Sean Fitzpatrick.
We have followed the relevant global bodies’ decisions, and we think the nomination is ineligible due to the three-month ban.
After testing positive for the banned substance clostebol in March, Sinner’s case was previously cleared by an independent panel.
According to the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) investigation, Sinner’s physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi had unintentionally contaminated him with the anabolic steroid.
Wada initially requested a two-year ban for the three-time Grand Slam champion after filing an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).
Wada settled, however, after realizing Sinner had been accidentally contaminated by a prohibited substance and that he had no intention of lying.
