Danielle Perkins and Claressa Shields defeated each other to claim the women’s heavyweight title in Michigan, making her the first undisputed world champion in three weight classes.
With just ten seconds left in the 10th and final round, the 29-year-old dominated fellow American Perkins with a powerful right-hand strike that won her over with unanimous consent.
Shields is also undisputed world champion at middleweight and light-middleweight.
“It was a really challenging training camp,” I said. And just last Friday I tore my labrum in my left shoulder, so I wasn’t able to use my good jab today.
“But because I had asked God to give me a big fight in my hometown, I didn’t want to call the fight off.” He did that. So I made the decision to continue with it.
“I feel so happy. And shout out to my opponent, Danielle Perkins. Man, that girl was strong as hell”.
