Senate Orders Probe Into Oil Spill, Fire Outbreak In Rivers

A recent fire outbreak and oil spill from Manifold Well 8/Bulk 008 in the OML 18 Buguma area of Rivers State was the subject of the Senate’s urgent investigation on Thursday.

Senator Harry Banigo, who represents Rivers West in the National Assembly, made this motion as a follow-up.

The upper chamber mandated swift action in a resolution passed in plenary to address the affected communities’ humanitarian and environmental effects.

The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) was given the order to launch an immediate investigation and prepare a report in four weeks.

Additionally, it mandated that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC OML 18 Ltd.) dispatch emergency response teams to assess the situation, implement remediation plans, and fulfill its obligations under corporate social responsibility.

Furthermore, the committees on Environment and Petroleum Resources (Upstream) were tasked with evaluating oil operators ‘ compliance with environmental regulations, including the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Act.
