Scott Mills admits furious BBC Radio bosses almost sacked him before replacing Zoe Ball
Things could have been so different with Scott Mills as the new host of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, despite his excellent performance.
The presenter, 51, replaced Zoe Ball on her morning show on the airwaves, switching from Radio 1. He has admitted that his time was almost sped up by angry bosses despite having been with the organization since 1998.
When Scott revealed how his wild antics almost cost him his job, he was talking to Dermot O’Leary. He addressed the altercation that had occurred following a night out after the Brit Awards. after Dermot broadcast a clip of Scott slurring his words on Dermot’s 2001 radio show.
He confessed that was the moment he was almost removed from his role by bosses, admitting: “That’s called how to really nearly lose your job at BBC. I had got carried away so much at the Brit Awards, because I had never been there before, and time just fast-forwarded, and somebody went, what time are you on air?
” And I said, ‘ Four? ‘ and they went, ‘ Well, it’s two now’. Oh no! It was horrendous. “
Scott claimed his actions were” naive and stupid”, explaining how his bosses were” quite rightly “furious”. And also, there was a thing, at Radio 1 then, called the den, “he went on.
When you can sleep in the den for a few hours, “Would you go home?” is probably not a good idea. I mean, I was young, I’m in my 20s, right? “
Scott’s admission comes as he remains a popular figure within the organisation’s listeners. His previous roles included presenting the early start on Radio 1 and the 2-4pm slot on BBC Radio 2
Scott revealed how she had aided him 20 years ago when he learned that he would be taking over from Zoe Ball, who had been providing the breakfast slot for six years. In November, he opened up on a small mistake Zoe made years ago, which, in an unexpected turn of events, helped propel his career forward. He explained to her, “I will never forget how you really looked after me and took my place because I didn’t know anyone there.”
He continued to explain how Zoe overslept before switching to him as her replacement. He referred to the incident as the “biggest favor” of his career because it gave him the opportunity to maintain the fort for a day.
” Because of that I then covered that breakfast show, “he gushed”. Whether it was in for you or for Sara (Cox), or then for Grimmie (Nick Grimshaw) or Chris Moyles, I did it for well over 20 years, all because you overslept. “
