The Dallas Cowboys hired Brian Schottenheimer, while the Raiders have named Pete Carroll as their new head coach.

Carroll, 73, led the Seattle Seahawks to Super Bowl victory in 2014 and becomes the oldest head coach in NFL history.

Schottenheimer, the son of legendary coach Marty, has been promoted from offensive co-ordinator to replace Mike McCarthy, who left the Cowboys after five years in charge earlier this month.

The 51-year-old has spent more than 25 years coaching various NFL teams, but he has no prior experience as a head coach.

Before his death in 2021, Schottenheimer was mentored by his father Marty during his final three seasons with the Cowboys.

Marty earned 200 regular-season wins during 21 years as a head coach, which included spells with the Cleveland Browns and the Kansas City Chiefs.

In a Monday press conference, the Cowboys will name Schottenheimer as their new head coach.

Kellen Moore, the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, previously worked for McCarthy at Dallas before being replaced by Schottenheimer.

In contrast to the two’s overall coaching experience, Schottenheimer boasted the “much longer resume” in a Cowboys statement, “despite not having called plays in Dallas during the McCarthy era.”

Antonio Pierce hasn’t worked since leaving Seattle at the end of his 14-year coaching contract until 2023, and Carroll is doing so now.

Prior to being fired earlier this month, Pierce had spent a full season in charge before going down in the AFC West with a 4-13 record. A 10-game losing streak led to Pierce’s departure.

Since moving to Las Vegas in 2020, Carroll is the Raiders’ fifth coach, along with those who have been in interim positions.

Carroll will be the 31st NFL player to have previously served as the New York Jets and New England Patriots’ head coaches in the 1990s.

Before becoming the Seahawks coach in 2010, he led the University of South California to a national championship.
