Brian Schottenheimer, the son of legendary coach Marty, has been appointed head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
Mike McCarthy, who left the Cowboys earlier this month after five years in charge, has been replaced by Mike Schottenheimer as offensive coordinator.
The 51-year-old has spent more than 25 years coaching various NFL teams, but he has no prior experience as a head coach.
Before his death in 2021, Schottenheimer was mentored by his father Marty during his final three seasons with the Cowboys.
Marty earned 200 regular-season wins during 21 years as a head coach with the Cleveland Browns, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Washington Commanders and the San Diego Chargers.
In a Monday press conference, the Cowboys will name Schottenheimer as their new head coach.
Kellen Moore, the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles before being replaced by Schottenheimer, also had a question for the role.
In contrast to the two’s overall coaching experience, Schottenheimer boasted the “much longer resume” in a Cowboys statement, “despite not having called plays in Dallas during the McCarthy era.”
He becomes Jerry Jones’ ninth head coach since 1989, making him the Cowboys’ 10th.
