Saoirse Ronan reveals private conversation with Paul Mescal after Graham Norton shutdown
After her remarks on The Graham Norton Show went viral, Saoirse Ronan admitted to having private conversations with her “dear friend” Paul Mescal regarding women’s safety.
Following her appearance on the show, the Hollywood star commented on gender-based violence while sat in a couch containing Paul, Denzel Washington, and Eddie Redmayne, earning praise from fans on social media.
Saoirse acknowledged that she and Graham are close friends and that the subject of Graham’s show is not something they have never discussed in private with Ryan Tubridy on Virgin Radio UK. She continued, “Paul is one of my dear friends, and I’ve already had those kinds of conversations with him,” adding, “He fully understands that.”
However, I believe that there was a moment like that on a program like Graham Norton, which is available on national television and even internationally, that it seemed to have had an audience that seemed to have really grown, which I think is amazing.
“It’s opening a conversation and again, hopefully it’s allowing more and more women to just be like, well, yeah, actually, let’s talk about our experience”. Saoirse also acknowledged that she had anticipated a “more women to speak out” in light of her comments.
She said: “The reaction has been wild. It’s definitely not something that I had expected, and I didn’t necessarily set out to sort of make a splash. However, I do believe there is a profound truth to be about the society we are currently in and how openly women are to men.
” So many men and women that I know from all over the world have gotten in touch with me about this one comment, which is, again, I would urge people, please, please, please to watch this in context. Please watch the whole interview or watch at least that part of the conversation, because it really wasn’t about… the boys weren’t sort of like debunking anything that I was saying.
“But at the same time, it felt very similar to what it felt when I was having dinner with a group of my friends, and I’ll always remember that this is a completely normal experience for us.”
Eddie revealed in the interview that he had been taught how to use a phone to retaliate against an attack while training for The Day of the Jackal. Amused by the concept, Paul, 28, replied: “Who is actually going to think about that? I’m not going to go “phone,” as he mimicked taking a phone out of his pocket to film if someone actually attacked me. Graham, 61, laughed at the idea and quipped: “Can you hold on a second”? Eddie added: “That’s a very good point”.
As the panel were shocked into silence before agreeing with her, Saoirse then brought up the harsh realities that women must deal with. She then said, “That’s what girls have to think about all the time. She then turned to the audience and said: “Am I right, ladies”? as they praised her.
