Here is the situation on Thursday, January 30:
Fighting
- A woman and her two-year-old child were reportedly killed in a drone attack on a home in Russia’s Belgorod region bordering Ukraine, the region’s Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said. Two people were reportedly injured in the attack.
- Overnight, 104 Ukrainian drones were destroyed by the Russian Ministry of Defense’s air defense systems. A “non-penetrating chest wound” was reported to have injured one man. The drone attacks also caused damage to cars and buildings.
- Vasily Anokhin, the mayor of Smolensk in western Russia, said the Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant, the largest power generating facility in the northwest area of Russia, was among Kyiv’s targets of the overnight attack. The unmanned aerial combat vehicle, according to Anokhin, was destroyed.
- 29 of the 57 drones launched by Russia overnight were shot down, according to Kyiv’s military, and 14 of them were unable to land on designated targets. Ukraine said Russia also launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile.
- Ukraine’s military also said it struck an oil refinery in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region, resulting in a large fire. Gleb Nikitin, the governor’s region, confirmed the fire and claimed it was ignored by debris from a destroyed drone.
- According to a source in the Ukrainian Security Service, an oil leak and fire were also caused by a Ukrainian drone strike that happened at Russia’s Andreapol oil pump station, according to Reuters news agency. A missile storage facility was also hit in the Tver region, causing a string of explosions.
- Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kiev, reported debris from a Russian drone that had fallen near a metro station in the capital’s Darnytskyi district. Kyiv was on an air raid alert for 30 minutes, according to information from the Ukrainian Air Force.
- Moscow’s troops seized control of the village of Novoielyzavetivka in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, according to reports from Russian media.
- Oleh Kiper, governor of Ukraine’s Odesa region, said a Russian overnight attack targeting the area’s port infrastructure left buildings damaged. Kiper reported no casualties.
Kursk incursion
- Russian officials met with relatives of trapped civilians in the Kursk region, according to the AFP news agency. The government’s efforts and coordinated social media campaigns by the families asking for their loved ones’ return are being criticized.
Russian gas and oil
- After member states expressed concerns about recommending alternative sources of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the European Commission, the commission decided against imposing the ban. However, Russian aluminium, video games and joysticks were on the list of banned items.
- Moldovan gas supplier Moldovagaz reported that it and a supplier in Transnistria have come to terms to resume gas deliveries to the separatist-held nation. An initial delivery of 3 million cubic meters of gas on credit has been agreed, according to the company.
Politics and diplomacy
- Australian national Oscar Jenkins, reported to have been killed after being captured by Russian forces in Ukraine, is “alive and in custody”, the country’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong said. She continued, however, that Mr. Jenkins’s status as a prisoner of war is still in grave doubt.
- Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged United States President Donald Trump to be on Kyiv’s side, which is the “side of justice”. He claimed that Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, was not afraid of Europe, and that Ukraine required more security guarantees.
- According to the Associated Press news agency, Western officials warned Ukraine about a potential loss of confidence in the nation as a result of Kyiv’s growing internal conflict between the procurement chief and the defense minister.
