  • Russia announced that it would launch criminal investigations into the alleged “cannibalistic massacre” of at least seven civilians in the village of Russkoe Porechnoye in western Russia, which Ukraine has occupied since August. Russian soldiers reportedly discovered corpses in a residential building’s basement.
  • The Ukrainian Army’s commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskii, said his military is suffering from a shortage of mechanised brigades. He also said military mobilisation capacity is “not sufficient” to cover the military’s needs, and gaps are being filled “within reasonable” limits by deploying personnel with other expertise.
  • In total, 5, 389 of these documented cases have been filed since February 2023, according to the Ukrainian General Staff, which includes 434 instances of Russian forces using ammunition loaded with banned chemicals in Ukraine in December 2024.
  • In a quick raid aimed at nine regions of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Air Force claims to have shot down 43 of the country’s 61 Russian drone attacks. No serious injuries or losses were immediately reported.
  • According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russian forces have taken control of the Vozdvyzhenka village in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.
  • The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that Russian forces recently advanced in the Russian region of Kursk, where Ukrainian forces have taken some territory, and the Ukrainian regions of Kupyansk, Lyman, Chasiv Yar, Torestsk, Kurakhove and Velyka Novosilka. According to ISW, Ukrainian forces have since taken back control of Chasiv Yar and Toretsk’s lost positions.
  • Additionally, the ISW reported that Russian volunteer military detachments are continuing to recruit women to the Russian Army.

Military aid

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed again for “the strong support” from Ukraine’s allies and for more United States-made Patriot air defence systems. This follows a week of more than 1, 000 Russian air offences.
