Rubio Confirms Takeover Of USAID, Vows To End ‘Insubordination’

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Monday he had been put in charge of the US aid agency, saying he would stop its “insubordination” to President Donald Trump’s agenda.
Rubio confirmed that he and the State Department had taken over control of the autonomous body after Trump’s billionaire friend and advisor Elon Musk announced his intention to axe the US Agency for International Development (USAID), whose website went offline over the weekend.
“I’m the acting director of USAID”, Rubio told reporters on a visit to El Salvador, although he said he was delegating day-to-day duties to a staffer.

Rubio, a senator who was opposed to foreign aid, claimed that USAID would continue to perform many of its functions but that it was acting as an “independent non-governmental organization.”
He claimed that “in many cases, USAID is engaged in programs that conflict with our national strategy.”
“It’s been 20 or 30 years that people have tried to reform it”, he said.
Rubio accused USAID professionals, many of whom have been put on leave, of failing to answer questions by the new Trump administration on their funding and priorities.
He claimed that “a lot of people find it impossible to conduct some sort of serious review.” “It’s going to stop and it’s going to end”.
