Road Infrastructure Cannot Rely Solely On Budget Provisions – Umahi

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, on Friday voiced his frustration over the current budgetary allocation for road infrastructure.

Umahi stressed during a session on budget defense in Abuja that improving the sector cannot be solely dependent on budgetary measures.

He called for alternative financing options, including loans, to meet the country’s infrastructure needs and cited the limitations of the current funding framework.

“I concur with Mr. President that budgetary appropriation alone cannot improve the road sector. We must support the President in seeking additional funding, including loans if we genuinely want to see improvements”, Umahi said.

He expressed dissatisfaction with the perception that the ministry’s funds are being used sparingly.

The minister’s assurance to lawmakers that any funds raised will be used in a timely manner demonstrates the ministry’s commitment to carrying out projects effectively.

He also compared the state of the country when the current administration took office, calling it “almost a near-failed state” and urged strategic steps to be taken to revitalize the road sector.
