Rivers Administrator Promises To Work With Stakeholders To Restore Peace

Vice Admiral Ibok-ete Ibas (rtd.), the newly sworn-in sole administrator for Rivers State. In the state, which is in crisis, he has pledged to uphold law and order.

Ibas, who was sworn in by President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, said, “We know the circumstances that led to why we are here, and Mr. President made it clear in his broadcast.

“I think that’s the utmost task that I have if the main concern is that of maintaining law and order in the state.”

The retired naval chief vowed to “work together with other stakeholders to ensure that we bring peace, order, security, and stability to the people and government of Rivers State and Nigeria at large.”

In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspended governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and resigned from the House of Assembly.

According to Tinubu, who relyed on Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution to support his position, he can’t continue to observe the political deterioration in Rivers.

Ibas, the oil-rich state’s chief of naval state from 2015 to 2021, was immediately appointed by the president as its sole administrator.

Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Femi Falana, the Labour Party (LP), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Nigerian Bar Association, the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), among others, have expressly rejected and condemned the suspension of Fubara and other democratically elected representatives.
