Although Richard Osman’s books and TV shows have gained him fans all over the world, his brother is just as well-known.

Author and host of The Thursday Murder Club, The Pointless TV, recently made headlines when he revealed that he had been taken into the hospital after waking up in agony. During a recent episode of his podcast The Rest Is Entertainment, Richard, 54, explained how doctors discovered he had a kidney stone.

“I’ve had quite the week of it. He told co-host Marina Hyde, “I woke up the other night in pain and with a kidney stone.” The most agonizing thing that has ever happened to me, he continued. I’m not sure I can buy that because the doctors kept saying it was more painful than childbirth.

But while his health update may have got people talking, Richard isn’t the only Osman to be in the limelight. In fact, the TV personality’s brother is Mat Osman, bassist and founder of the group Suede.

Suede, who is credited with songs like Animal Nitrate and My Dark Star, were also a part of the 90s’ British pop era along with Blur, Oasis, and Pulp. With three UK number one albums, the band’s success included scooping the acclaimed Mercury Prize in 1993 with their self-titled debut album.

The band disbanded in 2003, but they came back with a comeback performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2010. We split up for a while, in some ways, I believe. We were aware of how fragile and crucial music is in our return, Mat told Sky News.

“Almost until then, it became a bit of a treadmill – first the campaign, then the album, then the tour. And when we returned, we were very clear with each other and ourselves that we needed to make everything truly unique and unique.

Richard Mat is a successful author and has published two novels in addition to his chart-topping music career. His latest book, The Ghost Theatre, was published in 2023 and follows two teenagers in 17th-century London.

“My first novel was about a musician, about brothers and stuff and it drew from]my] experience. With The Ghost Theatre, I was very aware of my desire to write something without a safety net, where I had to make it all up. Because I want to be a writer, not a musician who has written a book”, he told The Guardian.

There is no sibling rivalry between the two, despite their careers advancing in similar directions in recent years. After his debut novel The Thursday Murder Club was released on the shelves of Good Housekeeping, Richard explained how his brother was there for him.

Following the success of David Levenson/Getty Images’ The Thursday Murder Club, Richard has made an open letter to his brother.

“I’m quite mainstream and he’s very cool. The book [The Thursday Murder Club] was released a few weeks later, and it was absolutely insane and number one. He said that it was nice to sit with him and that it was his first time seeing Suede and that he had in the 1990s.

“We are very different people, but one thing we’ll both do is knuckle down and work hard”.

Richard and Mat participated in a discussion at the Hay Festival together in 2023, and the duo have even supported one another’s literary success in public appearances. Richard and Mat shared a photo of the two after the event on Instagram as he gushed about the “lovely” day.

I had a great time talking to my brother Mat about his brilliant new book, “The Ghost Theatre,” at the Hay Festival. Then am insanely long and very funny signing queue”, he wrote.

The pair also gave viewers a closer look at their distinct career paths on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio last year. “I went into television because that’s how my brain works. That boom, boom, boom, entertain, entertain, entertain, keep people reading”, Richard explained.

Matthew went into music because, according to him, his thoughts are “passion, expressing your self, and attempting to bring beauty out of chaos.” And that’s how the books read, I think”.

Although the pair have achieved success that many only could hope for, they maintain that their accomplishments are unmistakable. When asked by The Guardian what was behind their fame, Mat admitted: “I really have no idea. Every now and then the pair of us do marvel at it because I think if you’d met us at about 15, you’d have thought, well… good luck to those two”!
