Richard Hammond has revealed that he wants to leave Jeremy Clarkson’s £1 million bar.
When Jeremy and Richard first started co-presenting Top Gear on BBC television in 2002, they first met. Their successful partnership, which included their subsequent television series The Grand Tour, was a result of their on-screen chemistry and shared passion for motoring.
When Richard finally arrives, Richard has playfully stated that he hopes to be banned from his pal’s pub. The star took to The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X and said: “No, I haven’t been yet. I want to go and get banned. Therefore, I must summon the drive to accomplish that. I don’t think it’ll be that difficult. I think he’s already banned James”.
James May is Richard and Jeremy’s fellow co-host on The Grand Tour and a long-time friend of Jeremy. Since its opening day, he has been barred from the. Kier Starmer and Maddy Hornby have also been reportedly banned by Jeremy. James is a co-owner of The Royal Oak pub in Swallowcliffe. When Richard was asked by host Chris if the pub was still open, he replied: “I don’t know, I guess so. I went there. I’ve been to his, but I haven’t yet been to Jeremy’s. I’m always asked”.
When asked he had to pay for his own drink at James ‘ pub, Richard said: “‘ Yeah, I had to pay for it”. James and Jeremy had been on Top Gear together since he joined in 2002, and James has since done so for over ten years. However, an on-set altercation between Jeremy and a producer led to the trio’s exit. They continued working together, however, and joined Amazon Prime for The Grand Tour in 2015.
Despite being successful on a new platform, James thinks the BBC could have handled Jeremy’s conflict, which included punching producer Oisin Tymon, in a different way. Following the incident, an investigation was launched. With Jeremy’s exit sealed, both James and Richard refused to sign a new contract, bringing the show’s most successful era to an end.
James admitted to The Times about how their exit turned out, saying, “I didn’t actually believe our Top Gear had to end because of it. To be honest, I believe it could have been fixed and reduced to a small amount of high stress and flightiness. It happened. It’s regrettable and it’s unfortunate, but it didn’t need to lead to the collapse of something very successful”. He continued, “It’s time for us to move on, not because of people.”
