Louis Rees-Zammit, a former rugby player from Wales, says he anticipates a second year of American football and expects to make a decision “in the next week or so.”

The 24-year-old is a free agent after the Jacksonville Jaguars opted not to sign him on a reserve/future contract, so he is able to negotiate with any team.

Rees-Zammit shocked rugby union when he announced he would leave the game to enroll in the NFL’s 10-week crash course to coach and evaluate aspiring players in January 2024.

He moved to Jacksonville last August after initially being signed to the Kansas City Chiefs for pre-season training, and he is now considering his 2025-to-2020 plans.

“Yeah, looking for options”, Rees-Zammit told ITV Sport.

Rees-Zammit scored 14 tries for Wales in 32 games. His final game for the national team was against Argentina in the World Cup quarter-final, which was his first defeat against Warren Gatland’s team’s record 14 consecutive Test losses.

No indications that he will give up on his NFL ambitions in order to make a quick recovery to support the Wales cause.

“It’s been a very tough year, but it’s one that I’ve learned so much]from] and I can really look forward to this year coming”, said Rees-Zammit, adding he was taking positive steps towards finding a new team.

Rees-Zammit hasn’t played for the NFL, but he did watch his former employers lose to New Orleans for the third time in a row in the Super Bowl.

Rees-Zammit was coached by Kansas City assistant head coach Dave Toub last summer, but he is still confident that the Welshman can succeed in American football.

“I love him. I really like him. He was a hard worker”, Toub told AFP in the build-up to the Chiefs ‘ 40-22 Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“He didn’t have the base fundamentals that these guys have, there’s going to be a learning curve for him.

” I hope he doesn’t give up. I think after two or three years, if it doesn’t click by then, time to go back to rugby. “

Jordan Mailata, a former rugby league player for the Eagles, also gave the former Wales and British and Irish Lions wing their support.

Everybody will encounter a challenge, according to Australian Mailata, who spoke to AFP.
