Record-breaking snowfall disrupts daily life in northern Japan’s Hokkaido

Record-breaking snowfall fell on&nbsp, Japan’s northern main island of Hokkaido, disrupting traffic, causing airport closures and delaying deliveries.

The Hokkaido prefectural government reported record-breaking snowfall in Obihiro and Kushiro, two of the island’s eastern regions, where drivers had sounded the need for assistance after their cars had sat in the snow.

Although the city did not experience significant disruptions when the popular snow festival in Sapporo, in southern Hokkaido, began.

Residents shoveled snow, and passengers pushed stuck-up vehicles on television. So far, no injuries or major damage have been reported.

In Obihiro, record-breaking snowfall of 129cm (4ft) was detected earlier on Tuesday.

On both sides of the Japanese archipelago, two powerful low-pressure systems are moving, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, bringing cold air into the area.

The agency predicted up to 100cm (3.3ft) of snowfall in northwestern Japan and 50cm (1.6ft) more in Hokkaido over the next 24 hours through Wednesday evening.

According to the prefecture, major thoroughfares and major thoroughfares were closed, and train services were suspended in the affected areas. Thousands of people’s flights into and out of Hokkaido were affected by the snow that was affecting the airports in Obihiro and Kushiro, and thousands of others were affected by the cancellations.

About 370 schools cancelled classes on Tuesday across Hokkaido, according to the prefecture.

Post offices and other distribution services were closed as a result of the snowfall, which caused delays in deliveries between Hokkaido and other parts of Japan.
