Sam Fender has been confirmed as one of this year’s BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend headliners.

The three-day Liverpool event will feature the Geordie legend in May. From Friday, May 23 through Sunday, May 25, the festival will take place in Sefton Park.

Sam was announced alongside Myles Smith, Wet Leg, Blossoms and Lola Young. Around 100 performers will take to the stage during the enormous annual event.

He shared his excitement of the announcement, telling his fans online all about it. He posted to Instagram alongside the words: “Headlining @bbcradio1’s Big Weekend in Liverpool this May”. with a hands-up emoji.

Sam is looking forward to the main stage.

Among those loving the announcement was Sam’s fellow North East musician, DJ Ben Hemsley. He emailed three heart-sized emojis in response. Fans were also buzzing, with one writing: “FENDER IN LIVERPOOL!!! HERE WE GOOOO”, alongside emoji faces with love heart eyes.

Sam will perform on the main stage of the show. Myles Smith, a pioneering artist, described his own inclusion as “unreal.” He said: “Big Weekend was always a dream of mine, and to be on the line-up again is insane”.

And Blossoms called Liverpool a “city close to our hearts” as they shared their own excitement. Lola Young also made a subtle nod to her chart-topping song as she assured her fans that the weekend would “get Messy.”

As Radio 1 upgrades its Dance Stage, New Music Stage, and BBC Introducing Stage, more headliner names will be revealed in the coming months. Bands will follow last year’s performers, including Coldplay, Raye and Chase &amp, Status, who impressed in Luton.

Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran both previously headlined in Norwich and Coventry’s annual event.
