Prince William’s devastating phone call about Kate’s cancer laid bare by ex-aide

After his wife, the Princess of Wales, was given the cancer diagnosis, Prince William’s former royal aide described him as at his “lowest” moments.
Jason Knauf previously held the positions of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and he left at the end of 2021. Last year, both the King and the Princess of Wales received cancer treatments. Charles is receiving ongoing medical care while Kate is currently in recovery.
In an interview with 60 Minutes Australia, Mr Knauf said: “Within a couple of weeks, if you’re Prince William, you find out that both your wife and your father have cancer. I couldn’t believe it”.

Describing a devastating phone call with William about Kate’s diagnosis, which was made public in March last year, Mr Knauf said: “It was awful, absolutely awful. It’s the lowest I’ve ever seen him. But the problem was that all this crazy conspiracy theory stuff kicked off in the background, online. ‘ Was she really ill? ‘.
They hadn’t told the children, and they were still figuring out how to tell them, so they didn’t want to say yet that she had cancer. Mr. Knauf once said, “How he and the princess were going to prepare their children for life in the public eye,” and that’s what he used to say in his previous conversations with William.
He continued, “His childhood in front of the media was quite challenging at times, and he was aware of how to raise his children around social media and mobile phones.”

In an ostensible attempt to compel Buckingham Palace to protect staff, Mr. Knauf complained about Meghan in October 2018 while working as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’ communications secretary. He allegedly addressed his concerns to William’s then-private secretary. The duchess’s legal team strenuously denied the allegation.
When asked about William’s relationship with Harry, Mr. Knauf said, “It’s very difficult for him to have his thoughts play out in the public eye, but I think everyone who knows him really has to respect that we should do the same.” But I will say, of course, it’s been hard and sad, especially for all of us who know both of them. “
In the 2023 New Year’s Eve Honours List, Mr. Knauf was elevated to the rank of Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (RVO). The American-born former corporate affairs officer previously held positions at a variety of organizations, including the Royal Bank of Scotland and the Treasury of New Zealand.
Before becoming the Royal Foundation’s CEO in September of that year, the former aide led a review of its structure and role from March 2019. He also oversaw the launch of the Foundation’s Earthshot Prize – William’s £50 million environmental prize, now an independent charity, which recognises solutions, ideas and technologies that” repair the planet”.
