Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham, has refuted reports that Mathys Tel had initially rejected the club before his deadline-day move to north London.
After meeting with chairman Daniel Levy in Germany, reports emerged last week that the 19-year-old forward refused to join Spurs.
However, Tel was spotted arriving in London on Monday before passing a deadline-day transfer deadline at Bayern Munich, where he had previously signed on loan with Spurs and having a £47.5m summer purchase.
When asked whether Tel had rejected Spurs, Postecoglou responded, “I think people need to understand that you are talking about a 19-year-old who has to make a major decision for his career, and it’s not that he has rejected us or rejected anyone else.”
He merely wanted to feel at ease with his choice, I believe. He deserves praise for pushing him in a certain direction, but I don’t believe that.
I spoke with him about football exclusively, and I believe he will find a great home here.
Despite the fact that they are currently 14th in the Premier League, Postecoglou has previously stated that he only wants to sign players committed to the club’s project.
When asked if he felt Tel was committed to Spurs, Postecoglou said: “Yes, 100%. I am more than 100% sure because he took so much time, was so diligent about finding out everything. He had other choices, which gave me more assurance that we are selecting the ideal player and mentality.
” He is very ambitious. He has a great self-belief and confidence. He believes he can rise to the top of the game and that his choice vindicates our actions.
In the second leg of the Carabao Cup match against Liverpool at Anfield on Thursday night, Tel could make his debut.
