Police Prosecute Reps Member Ikwechegh Over Alleged Assault Of Driver

 

The police authorities have arraigned Alex Ikwechegh, a federal lawmaker, before the Kuje Magistrate Court today, following accusations of assault on Steven Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver.

Ikwechegh, House of Representatives member for Aba North and South, Alex Ikwechegh, was arraigned Wednesday on a three-count charge bordering on assault and threat to life.

Force spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

According to him, the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Inspector General of Police is in charge of the investigation and prosecution.

“In response to a case of assault on a bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, by Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, on the night of October 27 2024, the  Hon. Justice was arraigned today following the conclusion of the case by the Nigerian Police Force Special Investigation Unit and the Legal Section. According to the statement, Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh is facing charges of abuse of office, criminal intimidation, and assault against the Kuje Magistrate Court, in violation of Sections 397(b) and 265 of the Penal Code Act.

Ikwechegh allegedly uses his position to intimidate the driver while repeatedly striking Abuwatseya in a viral video on X.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, had instructed a thorough investigation to ensure that justice is served and promotes human dignity in Nigeria, according to a spokesman for the organization. ”
