Philip Lowrie, who played Dennis Tanner in the long-running ITV soap Coronation Street, passed away at the age of 88, is best known for his iconic role. His publicist confirmed the actor’s passing on Friday, and the news broke about his passing.
His manager, Mario Renzullo, stated in a statement to the Mirror that “my client and very dear friend, Philip Lowrie, the beloved actor renowned for his role as Dennis Tanner on Coronation Street passed away yesterday at age 88. His death signifies the end of the longest-running soap in history, where he shaped the narrative of the show.
At the tender age of 24, Lowrie made his Coronation Street debut in the first episode of the series in 1960. Up until 1968, he remained a fixture on the adored soap, playing Dennis Tanner, the on-screen son of Elsie Tanner played by Pat Phoenix.
In 2011, he triumphantly made a comeback to the cobbles, breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest time between TV appearances playing the same character in the same show. Lowrie remarked at the time, “I’ve always been proud to have been a part of Coronation Street’s original cast.” “I’m now doubly proud to be included in the Guinness World Records book.”
In July 2014, he made his final appearance as Dennis Tanner. His character was ultimately axed off-screen to commemorate Corrie’s ten thousandth episode in 2020.
Lowrie appeared on stage in roles like Klever in The Case of the Frightened Lady and Major Metcalf in The Mousetrap. Doctors, Casualty, and Andy Capp are some of his other TV credits.
He also acted as Mr. Lakin in the 2015 ITV series Home Fires and voiced Fifteen on Channel 4.
The longest time between television appearances as the same character in the same program was a Guinness World Record, which Mr. Lowrie won in September 2011.

The actor recalled his long-lasting career with Inside Soap in 2011 by saying, “I hope I can stay in Corrie,” adding, “I’m having the best time of my life. The best of both worlds exists because I used to live in London but now work here in Manchester for a few days a week.
He continued, “It’s fantastic for me to have a job that I love so much and get to play such an amazing role in my life.” To be completely honest with you, I can’t believe my luck.
Tributes to the adored actor have been sizable since the sad news has been released. A distraught fan wrote online to express their sadness at learning about Dennis Tanner’s passing. Nearly 65 years ago, he made his first appearance on the show’s first episode.
