Phil Collins issues another emotional health update – ‘It’s still sinking in’
As 2024 draws to a close, Phil Collins has released yet another ominous health update.
The musician, who has health issues, has stated that he is still accepting that he will not be able to perform again.
The former Genesis star, 73, has back and neck issues for a long time, and the drummer and singer decided to stop performing live shows after getting too ill. Phil is now retelling his career in a new documentary, Phil Collins: Drummer First, which will focus more on his drumming expertise than his singing.
Phil sits at a drum kit and holds a pair of sticks as he reveals that the reality of his retirement is still ebbing in the documentary as footage from the day he announced his retirement is eerie.
The frail-looking musician said: “It’s still kinda sinking in a little bit. You know, I’m 71. I’ve spent all my life playing drums. It shocks me to suddenly not be able to do that.
Phil added afterwards: “I’m not a singer who plays the drums. I prefer to play some drums than I do a drummer.
Phil is clearly moved as he holds drumsticks for the first time in a while thanks to his son, Nic, 23, who served as his father’s drummer during their farewell tours.
The pop star said as he prepared to play the drums, “If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I will have a crack at it.” I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles”. Phil added: “It’s still kind of sinking in a bit. I’ve spent all my life playing drums. It shocks to suddenly not be able to do that. If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything”.
Since sustaining a serious vertebral injury in 2009 while giving a performance and causing nerve damage, the drummer has had debilitating health issues. Phil acknowledged that he would probably never play the drums again when he told the Daily Mail that year. He lamented: “After playing drums for 50 years, I’ve had to stop. Due to the position I drum in, my vertebrae have been causing abrasion to my spinal cord. It comes from years of playing. I even taped the sticks to my hands to get through, but I was unable to hold them properly without hurting.
On Drumeo’s YouTube channel starting December 18, Phil Collins: Drummer First can be watched.
