Peter Obi Makes U-Turn Over Comment On Alleged Grid Collapse

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for 2023, has made a 180-degree turn about his alleged comment about the national grid’s alleged collapse.

In a post on X, Obi stated that the grid’s incessant decline, which occurred 12 times in 2024, has caused Nigerians to experience “untold setback and hardship.”

He claimed that the nation’s power sector has continued to suffer as a result of grid collapse, despite borrowing more than $3.23 billion over the past four years to fix its electricity problems.

However, many Nigerians criticized him for not verifying issues before acting on them.

Obi later changed his position, claiming that his initial statement was based on information obtained from trustworthy media outlets.

Following clarifications from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) regarding the situation, Obi claimed in a follow-up post on X that he had learned that there had not been a grid collapse.

“I’ve since learned that there wasn’t a collapse like the one I mentioned in my earlier message regarding the alleged collapse of the National Grid, which was based on reports from trustworthy media outlets. Instead, the incident involved the tripping of the Osogbo-Ihovbor and Benin-Omotosho lines, which affected the Lagos axis.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) provided me with thanks for their prompt response.

“I sincerely hope that we will give improving our power sector’s infrastructure a priority and continue to work toward improving power generation in order to meet the needs of the more than 200 million Nigerians.”

The TCN earlier made it clear that the outage was the result of the Osogbo-Ihovbor and Benin-Omotosho lines tripping, which would indicate that the claims of grid collapse were false.
