People just learning Emma Stone isn’t her real name – and reason she had to change it
After learning that Emma Stone, the Oscar-winning actress’ first name, is not even Emma, the public was left speechless.
The 35-year-old actress made the revelation as she spoke on stage during a press conference and appeared relieved when a reporter chose her birth name rather than her stage name.
Actors and musicians frequently go by a different name than the one they were born with. Take Marshal Mathers for instance, better known as Eminem, or Winona Ryder, who was actually born Winona Laura Horowitz.
Some celebrities find their name to have enough “star appeal” to stand out among the crowd, while others are eager to change it as soon as they can because they don’t like their given moniker.
Although Emma Stone never has denied that her real name was Emily, she still uses the name Emma in professional circles as a stage name for another actor in the SAG-AFTRA union.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-winning actress said: “When I get to know them, people that I work with do. It’s just because my name was taken. Then, a few years ago, I freaked out.
The La La Land actress acknowledged that she had a identity crisis after realizing she wanted to go by the name Emily instead, but had already capitalized on the stage name to advance.
Stone revealed how she came up with the name “Emma” after her favorite Spice Girl, Emma Bunton, also known as Baby Spice, on The Tonight Show in 2018.
She said: “Growing up, I was super blonde, and my real name is Emily, but I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice and guess what? Now I am”.
Shared on X, formerly Twitter, one user wrote: “Just found out emma stone’s real name is emily”. Another user responded: “What? my life is a lie”. Someone else penned: “wait what”? A fourth user wrote: “and who gave you the right to ruin my life with this information”?
Stone isn’t the only celebrity whose stage name has a childhood resemblance to her. Bruno Mars, a best-selling musician, received his famous stage name as a result of his father’s nickname.
Peter Gene Hernandez, the singer’s birth name, was born Peter Gene Hernandez, and despite his success, some of his devoted fans have been left wondering how he came to be known as Bruno Mars, given that his real name is a long way off.
One Quora user asked: “How did Bruno Mars get his name”? The singer, who is now 31 years old, was given the nickname Bruno by his father because he resembled wrestler Bruno Sammartino when he was younger.
A statement reads: “You may know Bruno Mars as a multi-talented performer and a brilliant songwriter, but do you know his real name? Bruno is one of the many celebrities who go by stage names that completely displace the ones they were born with.
” Born Peter Gene Hernandez, the 31-year-old singer landed the nickname Bruno as a toddler because he resembled famous wrestler Bruno Sammartino.
“While seeking a recording contract at the age of 17 in La, Bruno acquired the last name Mars because of the responses he would receive: ‘ Your last name’s Hernandez, maybe you should do this Latin music, this Spanish music… Enrique’s so hot right now. ‘ Perhaps he wanted to sound alien from Earth”?
