Prior to his passing, late actor Paul Danan acknowledged that his ADHD had had an impact on his romantic relationships.
The former Hollyoaks star admitted that having ADHD as an adult made it easier for him to understand why he was “still single” and regretted not discovering it sooner.
Paul’s death at the age of 46 was announced on Thursday, with tributes pouring in for the dad-of-one from fans and famous friends. Paul Danan passed away at the age of 46, according to a statement from Independent Creative Management.
” Known for his television presence, exceptional talent, and unwavering kindness, Paul was a beacon of light to so many. All those who knew him will have irreplaceable voids in their lives as a result of his premature departure. During this difficult time, we kindly request respect and privacy for Paul’s family, friends, and colleagues. “
Paul recalled in an interview from 2022 how it was only after discovering he had ADHD that he realized why his romantic pursuits were frequently dramatic and disastrous. I’ve been single my entire life because of how it’s affected my relationships, Paul said in response to my diagnosis in 2019.
Paul, who was linked to famous women like Kelly Brook, Katie Price, Mel Sykes, Emma Bunton and Isaballe Hervey, went on to add to The Sun:” If you’re with someone who doesn’t understand you and I’m not understanding myself, it’s only now that I can talk about it and I can learn more. I was a very late diagnosis and […] I wish I would’ve known earlier. “
Paul reaffirmed his desire to settle down and find “the right person” on social media last year. He acknowledged that ADHD is a superpower that allows you to focus on what you enjoy and then use your best efforts to achieve it. However, anything you don’t like will keep you interested in doing, leading to complete boredom, he said.
Paul added:” That goes for people and relationships too. If you’re not bothered, your attention span is not there. We]those with ADHD] can’t regulate our emotional mind very well, so we say things without pausing and thinking, whereas most people would have that filter where they think: ‘ maybe I shouldn’t say that. ‘ We have a very emotional mind, are very impulsive, and simply say what we’re thinking without thinking, “That might offend or upset them,” only to have regrets afterward when we reflect on it.
The former soap star, who was scheduled to appear in court on drug charges, passed away the day before. Paul was known for his reality TV roles, including on Celebrity Big Brother and Celebrity Love Island, as well as his 1997 television series Sol Patrick.
A spokeswoman for Avon and Somerset Police said officers were called to an address in Brislington, Bristol, at about 5.20pm on Wednesday”, where sadly a man in his 40s was declared deceased by paramedics”. She continued, “Officers are preparing a file for the coroner, and the death is not being treated as suspicious.”
According to court records, Paul was scheduled to make his plea hearing at Warrington Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after being accused of possessing several bags of cocaine and a “quantity” of marijuana. He was also accused of driving whilst under the influence of drugs on October 2 last year, in Warrington, Cheshire. Paul had been open about his struggles with addiction, including trying to get back to his old self.
He had appeared on ITV’s Celebrity Love Island as a contestant in 2005 and 2006, but did not win either series. He also appeared in the 2006 ITV2 reality show Calum, Fran And Dangerous Danan, in which he, former Westlife bodyguard and Celebrity Love Island winner Fran Cosgrave, and Calum Best, travelled across the US.
In 2017, Paul took part in Channel 5’s Celebrity Big Brother, when he was evicted early, and said at the time he hoped the series would give him a” second chance “at his career. He frequently requested a return to Hollyoaks, and he later co-founded the podcast The Morning After With Paul Danan, which ran from 2019 to 2023.
