Okpebholo Approves 21-Year Jail Term For Cultists, Sponsors In Edo
The Governor of Edo State has ratified the 2018 Edo State Secret Cult Prohibition Law, 2025, into law.
The new law, which was recently approved by the governor’s assembly in Edo State, will become effective on January 24, 2025.
Disclosing this in a statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, said the new law contains stiffer penalties for anyone connected to cult-related offences.
He noted that if found guilty, those who commit murder in order to support cult-related activities will receive the death penalty, while those who financially or materially support the crime will face 21 years in prison.

According to the statement, harbouring of cultists or allowing the use of one’s property for cult activities , attracts a 10-year imprisonment and demolition of such property.
This new law provides for the death penalty for those who commit murder in order to support cult activities, 10 years of imprisonment for those who harbor cultists or permit their property be used for cult-related activities, and 21 years of imprisonment for those who commit murder in order to support cult activities, according to Itua.
These measures are intended to deter those who choose to endanger the security and stability of Edo State rather than to intimidate law-abiding citizens.
Itua stated that the move demonstrates Okpebholo’s commitment to restoring peace, security, and order in Edo State.
This law addresses both preserving lives and ensuring Edo State’s future, not just punishment. Many young people have lost their potential because they have been turned into weapons of violence rather than as social contributors as a result of cultural activities. With this legislation, Edo people are taking Edo State back from the hands of criminals and ensuring that families, businesses, and communities can thrive without fear.
