Obasa Should Be Suspended For Insisting He’s Speaker – Ex-Lawmaker
Former deputy majority leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Oluyiwa Jimoh, claims Mudashiru Obasa should be fired for insisting that despite his removal, he will continue to serve as the Assembly’s speaker.
“He (Obasa) claims to still be the speaker, but I believe he is aware that the result is automatic suspension.” For doing that, I believe he deserves a suspension. It is an impersonation”, Jimoh said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme, on Monday.
“How is it possible for him to speak the house truthfully? It is going to lead to his suspension. he knows its implication. He has lived there for almost 20 years. If I were to be in the house, I am going to move a motion for his suspension”.
More than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house voted him out on January 13th, 2025, prompting his removal as Lagos speaker due to alleged misconduct and other offenses.

Obasa’s then deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was immediately elected the new Speaker, becoming the first female to take charge of the legislative body in the South-West state.
Obasa, from Agege Constituency I, was first elected into the House in 2007. Since then, he has since entered the chamber. Before being fired in January 2025, he was elected speaker in June 2015.
He criticized the militarisation of the assembly complex during the impeachment process and said he remained in office until the right thing was done on Saturday, January 25, 2025. He also claimed that while he was away from Nigeria, he was removed as speaker.
However, Jimoh, a former member of the House, said Obasa does not need to be in the House before he can be removed as speaker.
“He (Obasa) doesn’t need to be in the House to be impeached. It is stipulated in the constitution: section 92 sub-section 2 states it clearly”, Jimoh said.
The former lawmaker added that Obasa’s removal from his position as the House’s deputy majority leader while he was a parliamentarian was a result of his efforts.
“It was disappointing that he had taken me away. I was not informed of the removal procedure. Because he compelled and intimidated members to sign for my removal, I didn’t object. I took it in good fate”, Jimoh said.
I was disappointed that Obasa let me go as the LSHA’s Deputy Majority Leader. I’m happy that he has been impeached.

Jimoh defended his removal, saying it was “because I do challenge him on some of his policies that were anti-democratic and anti-due process.”
