Donald Trump was congratulated on his victory on Wednesday by former president Barack Obama, who stressed the importance of a peaceful transition of power.

Obama’s remarks contrast sharply with Trump’s unprecedented refusal to concede defeat to Joe Biden four years prior, which led to the violent attack by his supporters on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

“This is obviously not the outcome we had hoped for”, Obama said in a statement. Living in a democracy requires accepting that our point of view can be changed, as well as accepting the peaceful transfer of power.

The former president praised Tim Walz and Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign victories, both of which were unfavorably defeated in the election.

They served as “two extraordinary public servants who ran a remarkable campaign,” according to Obama.
