NUC Hikes Private University Application Fee From ₦6m To ₦30m

The application fee for establishing private universities in Nigeria has increased by over 400%, according to the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The commission’s Executive Secretary, Abdullahi Ribadu, in a statement on Monday, said the price hike is for better coordination and to ensure that newly established private universities are positioned to meet the challenges of the 21 Century.

The cost of purchasing application forms for the establishment of a private university increased from N1m to N5m.

Additionally, the Commission increased the application fee from N5 million to N25 million for the establishment of a private university.

Applications received through the NUC at the former rate of N1 million, but they have not yet paid the processing fee for their application, according to the NUC.

They are also anticipated to make payments within a 30-day window, the statement read, “or their pending applications may be forfeited,” the statement read.

The Commission also suspended the processing of all inactive applications, including those from private open universities, for the first two years after receiving any progress in applications or submissions.

“The Commission hereby imposes a Moratorium for a period of one year with effect from Monday, 10th February, 2025 on:

Inactive applications for the establishment of new private universities to allow the Commission to thoroughly evaluate these pending applications and assess their viability,

“Applications on Step 1 of the 14-Step Procedure (i. e. those that have submitted Letters of Intent only), and

” Acceptance of fresh applications for the establishment of private universities, including private open universities.

The Commission will continue to process pending active, to the avoid any doubt. applications and submit the Federal Executive Council with appropriate recommendations for approval.
