‘No Honest Mistake’: US Says Nigerians Overstaying Visa Risks Ban 

Travelers are being warned by the United States Mission in Nigeria that overstaying visas could result in a permanent ban and criminal prosecution.

The mission stated in a statement on Monday that excuses like “honest mistake” cannot be justified.

“You could face a permanent ban on entry to the United States as well as criminal prosecution if you overstay your US Visa.”

Consular officers are aware of past violations and have full access to your immigration history.

The mission warned that “nothing can be an “insincere mistake,” stressing that it is everyone’s responsibility to use visas correctly.

Donald Trump, who became president on January 20, 2025, promised mass deportations of “criminal aliens” who had illegally entered the country.

The United States announced last Friday that it would terminate the country’s hundreds of thousands of immigrants’ legal status and give them weeks to leave. Around 532, 000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans who immigrated to the United States as part of a scheme launched in October 2022 by Joe Biden’s successor, were affected by the order, which was made even more extensive in January of that year.

According to official sources, there were 376, 000 Nigerian immigrants living in the US as of 2015. The main immigration to the United States comes from Nigeria.
