One of the Niger Delta’s illegal refineries and pipelines was discovered, according to the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited.
In 2024, Nigeria reported more than 589 oil spills, the majority of which were caused by theft.
According to the breakdown of the figures, 19 illegal pipeline connections and 58 illegal refineries were discovered.
NNPCL claimed to have recorded 159 incidents of oil theft in the area in a video documentary released on Tuesday on the NNPCL’s official YouTube channel.
Between January 18 and January 24th, 2025, a number of operations were carried out to make the discoveries.
The investigation resulted in the discovery of numerous illegal oil installations and the arrest of 25 suspects.
The broadcast states that “an industry-wide security collaboration to safeguard hydrocarbon infrastructure continues to produce remarkable results.”

The list included the names of the various businesses and government security agencies that are involved in the operations, including NMPC Ltd’s Command and Control Center, Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Ltd, Maton Engineering Nigeria Ltd, Shell Petroleum Development Company Ltd, Oando PLC, and the Oil and Gas Corporation.
The development comes a week after the national oil company revealed 29 pipeline connections and 55 illegal refineries had been discovered.
NNPCL noted that a , a major breach was reported on the River State Oando to NLNG Boni gas pipeline system after listing some of the most significant oil theft incidents.
Additionally, it revealed a gas pipeline was destroyed, causing a shutdown for Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG, and was also reported.
The national oil company reported finding numerous instances of illegal connections to condensate pipelines and crude oil pipeline vandalism in Bayelsa State’s Ikenzi and Oruma regions.
“Similar breaches were discovered in Ugu, Edo State, Ipu South, Abia State, and at a wellhead in Buguma, River State”, the broadcast notes.
The business reported that all illegal connections had been repaired and that repairs had been successfully carried out.
Illegal refineries were reportedly discovered in Bile, Boni, Oigu, Okoloma, Ayama, and Ward 7, Dema Abe, all in River State.
In a breakdown of the 159 incidents in the Niger Delta region, it was noted that seven incidents were recorded in the Western corridor, 72 in the Central Corridor, 41 in the Eastern corridor, and 39 in the Deep Blue water.
