The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to release the embattled leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, from detention.
Since being repatriated to Nigeria from Kenya in June 2021 under obscene circumstances, the IPOB leader has been in custody. At a Federal High Court in Abuja, he is facing terrorism-related charges from the Nigerian government.
Kalu made the appeal on Wednesday while giving reporters a briefing about the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) meeting that the House of Representatives committee held at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.

We ask that he temper justice with mercy and allow the southeast’s residents to release Nnamdi Kanu. He added that it will give our citizens more security and encourage the SEDC’s growth, he added.
“We observed that Nnamdi Kanu’s release will lessen the degree of insecurity there. We believe that Nnamdi Kanu’s release will provide more security for our people.
He noted that President Tinubu’s swift approval of the South East Development Commission Bill, which was rejected in previous assemblies, demonstrated his love for the South-Easterners.
Kalu also suggested that rather than the current legal strategy, the region’s citizens will be forever grateful to the President if that becomes a reality.
“There will be no other reason to be on the street if those who are using him as justifications to carry out these criminal acts in our area.” Then, whoever claims Nnamdi Kanu is responsible for harming the people of South-East will be apprehended by the police and security forces.
