In protest of the recently approved 50% telecom tariff increase, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced that it will hold a nationwide mass rally on February 4, 2025.
According to a communique signed by the NLC president, Joe Ajaero, on Wednesday, the decision was taken at an emergency meeting convened by the union’s National Administrative Council (NAC) on Wednesday.
A population that is struggling and is only earning a minimum wage of $75,000, a population that has seen an outrageous increase in the cost of gasoline, the high cost of food, the hike in electricity tariff, and general rising inflation, according to the NLC, should be a warning.

It directed its affiliates and state councils to begin full mobilization in advance of the rally’s planned nationwide, and it also urged allies of civil society to join in the effort.
The Congress also urged the general public, the informal sector, and all Nigerian workers to show their support for what it termed unfair policy.
The NLC claimed that its NAC-in-session completely rejected the 50% Telecom Tariff Hike, which it deemed to be too harsh for the public.
Therefore, it firmly refutes the Nigeria Communications Commission’s decision to approve the telecommunications tariff increase.
” This decision is insensitive, unjustifiable, and a direct assault on Nigerian workers and the general populace, who are already burdened by worsening economic hardship foisted on them by Policies of government which was no fault of theirs, “the union said.
The 50% tariff increase was immediately demanded by the NLC.
In light of the economic realities confronting Nigerians, it demanded from the Federal Government, the NCC, and the National Assembly to engage in meaningful dialogue with key stakeholders.
The Congress added that if this is ignored, it could start a nationwide boycott of telecommunications services and launch additional mass protests that might result in the cancellation of our service to protest policies that lead to inequality and poverty.
The Nigeria Labour Congress will continue to defend the rights of Nigerian workers and citizens from unfair economic practices.
“We will not give up on policies that threaten our people’s well-being and dignity. Citizens and workers in Nigeria must work together to stop further economic oppression.
The union continued, “We must oppose any policy that prioritizes the welfare of the people over corporate profits.”
The NCC approved a 50% tariff increase for telecoms operators in the nation on January 20.
Reuben Muoka, a spokesman for the regulator, stated in a statement that the price adjustment was made while taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will have a positive impact on sustainability.
The regulator claimed that the increase was in accordance with Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA)’s authority to regulate and approve telecommunications operators’ tariff rates and fees.
