NIMC Says Committed To Launching New National Identity Card Soon

The Federal Government has committed to introduce the updated General Multipurpose Card (GMPC) sooner in the year through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

a statement by the Agency described the new National ID Card as a single, convenient, and General multipurpose card (GMPC), that eliminates the need for multiple cards.

The innovative card, developed in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), is powered by AfriGO, a national domestic card scheme that is regulated by the CBN and offers transparent and cost-effective card payments.

Currently, the 26 commercial and microfinance banks are issuing the AfriGo cards in the country.

The innovation, according to NIMC, will address cardholders’ need for physical identification to be able to access government and private social services.
