Nigerian, Okezie Ogbata, pleads guilty to defrauding 400 Americans of $6m
Okezie Ogbata, a native of Nigeria, has admitted guilt to defrauding more than 400 elderly and vulnerable Americans of more than $ $6 million through a transnational inheritance fraud scheme in a Florida district court.
The 36-year-old and his accomplices defrauded victims by sending false letters to claiming to be Spanish bank representatives, according to the US Department of Justice.
Ogbata is set to be sentenced on April 14, 2025, by US District Judge Roy Altman.
He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The letters falsely informed recipients that their deceased relatives had left them multimillion-dollar inheritances abroad.
Victims were told to “to send money for delivery fees, taxes, and other payments to prevent government inquiries.”
Ogbata admitted to being the organizer of the scheme, which disproportionately targeted elderly and vulnerable people in his plea on January 15.
