Nigeria@64: Borno Scales Down Celebration, Calls For Prayers
The Borno State Government has decided to reduce its Independence Day celebration this year in light of the recent, devastating flood disaster that affected Maiduguri Metropolis and other nearby local government areas.
Professor Usman Tar, the state’s director of information and internal security, made the announcement on Monday, stressing the need for collective reflection and cooperation in this difficult time.
In addition to causing severe damage to vital infrastructure like hospitals, schools, roads, and bridges, the flood caused extensive damage to hundreds of families.
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum again expressed deep sympathy for all those affected, and urged people to pray together for the state and the entire country.
The statement quotes the governor as saying, “While we celebrate our nation’s independence day, we must, however, focus on supporting and standing in solidarity with those affected by the September 10 flood disaster. Let’s take this opportunity to pray for strength and recovery for Nigeria as a whole.
“Government will redirect resources and efforts toward the rehabilitation of infrastructure that the flood destroyed, and we will offer relief to our people, ensuring that the families who are impacted receive the necessary aid and support.”
