Robert Williams has opened up about the agonizing “shame” he experiences from his failed romance with All Saints singer Nicole Appleton.

When the star bravely recalled the true impact Take That stardom had had on his life, describing his crippling anxiety, depression, and addiction that came along with it, the show left viewers in awe when his tell-all Netflix docuseries came out last year.

And now the singer, 50, is delving further into his past in the semi-biographical film Better Man, which has been released this week. According to reports, the story makes references to his previous romance with Nicole, age 49, who he met while producing Top of the Pops in 1997.

Robbie proposed to the singer a year later when Nicole made the difficult choice to abort their child, which she alleges was forced to do by music industry bosses. Their turbulent nine-month romance ended abruptly.

Nicole claimed that her record label forced her into it despite Robbie’s requests for nothing more than to welcome their baby. And she felt as though she wanted to end her life after the tragic loss of their child.

Nicole wrote, “Robbie Williams put his hand on my belly and said, This baby is saving my life,” in her 2002 book, Together with her sister Natalie. I was shocked after having my abortion. I couldn’t believe what I had done. I wanted to kill myself”.

She added: “Afterwards, everyone pretended it hadn’t happened. I was too scared for confrontation. I’m just starting toregain my self-assurance. But I had to confront it all when I wrote about it. I’m so glad I did it. It was there, but I’d never told anyone in detail. I thought, “Now, please explain why my confidence disappeared.”

Robbie, who has spoken about the relationship in the past, has described revisiting the experience as the “most difficult” part of watching the new film. Hello! Nicole was reportedly consulted on the script and invited to a screening early, according to the magazine.

The hardest part of watching Nicole and what we went through is, according to the former Take That member, because she was told to get rid of our baby. I didn’t make her do that – but I was a f***ing awful boyfriend, like, really awful, and I was in the height of my addiction and alcoholism. Because she is a total angel, and there is still shame attached to who I was then, it always breaks my heart.

Nicole, who went on to have a son with Oasis star Liam Gallagher, says she kept it a secret for so long because of how ‘ small ‘ the music world is, adding: “I couldn’t do anything because I was in the band”.

She previously acknowledged that Robbie was her life’s true love, but they broke up in January 1999 due to heartbreak. She claimed that Robbie supported sharing their loss in her memoir, but he still found it to be painful.

He previously told the Daily Mail: “I was completely behind her… I completely support her if there is something so deeply ingrained in you that you feel it would feel better to you to have it removed because secrets can make you feel terrible and sick, and you exorcinate it.

” It was really sad though, it was really sad. I had to know what was going on with it because I was going to return to England and there would be questions like this being asked, which inevitably caused me to be upset and a little split.

In Robbie’s debut movie, the former couple are now reliving agonizing memories, but they are also putting up support for one another. Robbie told Hello! that he and Nicole called him after the screening of Better Man, which took place prior to the movie’s official release. He claimed that they both wept during the conversation and that he anticipated giving her a hug at the premiere.

The singers eventually had happy endings because Nicole, who has a 22-year-old son Gene and Liam, is now married to commercial director Stephen Haines. In March 2020, she gave birth to her daughter Skipper.

When Robbie and Adya Field met in 2006 while working on a UFO documentary that Robbie was producing for Radio 4, they met and have been married for 14 years. After their many ups and downs, breaking up three times, they had four children Theodora ‘ Teddy ‘ 11, Charlton ‘ Charlie’, nine, Colette ‘ Coco and three-year-old Beau Benedict.
