Nick Frost, the star of Shaun of the Dead, has openly stated that he has no feelings for his parents, a sign of emotional neglect from a young age.

The 52-year-old actor expressed his stance on his upbringing in a recent interview. When asked what he owed his parents, he said: “Nothing. I feel completely abandoned, as I did it myself when I was just a kid. So in terms of thanking them – no, not really. I’d probably tell them off, if I’m honest”.

Nick has come to terms with his late mother’s actions by calling her a “terrible alcoholic” and saying to The Guardian, “She was a terrible alcoholic and I spent a lot of my time kind of hating her but, over the past five years, I realized why she did what she did and I could forgive.”

The “Shaun of the Dead” star also discussed how his dad’s passing from lung cancer had impacted his outlook on life, telling the Daily Telegraph: “My dad had spent a lot of his life looking after her. My dad passed away, and it seemed like I had my best friend back and was content again, but five years later he developed lung cancer. And he disappeared nine months later.

Moreover, Frost shared insights into his journey towards self-care: “Five years ago, I started looking after myself a bit more, emotionally and spiritually, and it’s paid dividends. My mother stole so much of my life, and I felt bad about it. And then, just before my dad passed away, my other brother and sister passed away before my dad passed away. It became just lots of admin. I didn’t deal with the grief at all. I had no idea how it was affecting me.

His close friend and frequent collaborator Simon Pegg, who was on Mission: Impossible’s set in 2023, made an admission to hiding his drinking. Hot Fuzz legend Simon told host Lauren Laverne on BBC4’s Desert Island Discs, “You become very sneaky when you have something like that in your life.

Because it takes over, you learn to do it without anyone notice. It wants to sustain itself and it will do everything it can to not be stopped…But eventually it just gets to a point when it can’t be hidden, and that’s when, thankfully, I was able to pull out of the dive. “
