New Man Utd stadium could bring £7bn boost – report

According to a new report, replacing Old Trafford with a new 100, 000-seater Manchester United stadium and revitalizing the area could bring in £7 billion.

The figures were released as part of a feasibility study led by Lord Sebastian Coe, a task force that looked into options for a new or redeveloped ground.

It discovered that Old Trafford could have a capacity increase of 87, 000 if it were to be renovated, with the club having until summer to decide how to proceed.

Manchester United, Greater Manchester Combined Authority, and Trafford Borough Council were given a report outlining the options.

Part of the feasibility study included a survey of more than 50,000 Man Utd season ticket-holders, which found more than half favoured a new stadium.

Prior to the decision to build the stadium, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham announced plans to establish a new organization to aid in the project’s progress.

A mayoral development corporation (MDC) is a statutory body with authority to require purchases.

Mr Burnham told BBC Radio Manchester this would ensure space around Old Trafford could be cleared to “maximise the club’s options”.

“It’s all about removing the freight terminals and the freight that travels directly through Old Trafford in Manchester.”

Every rail passenger in the north-west will gain from the removal of that freight from our city center, according to the statement “It’s not just United supporters.”

Liz Patel, a councillor in Trafford, described the area’s wider regeneration as a “long-term plan that will take years to bear fruit.”
