Following controversy over her controversial social media posts, Netflix has distanced itself from Karla Sofia Gascon, the Oscar nominee and Emilia Perez star.

After receiving the most nominations, the film was expected to win the next month’s awards with 13 nominations. However, a scandal involving the leading actress caused the film’s hopes to be shattered. Karla, the first openly trans nominee, was in contention for best actress, but racist and historic social media posts threaten to derail the film’s aspirations. Netflix, a streaming service for the day, announced plans to fire Karla, 52, who is not expected to attend any upcoming events to promote the movie, including the Oscars.

She previously apologized in numerous ways for the outdated posts, some of which reference George Floyd and Islam. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix removed her from promotional emails and plans to edit the movie’s posters, but it appears it hasn’t been enough to quell the furore. Additionally, they claim that the streamer will not be responsible for paying for Karla’s styling or travel expenses to these events.

This week’s pre-Oscars promotional flight from her home in Spain is not expected to take her to LA.

A look back through the Spanish actor’s X/Twitter posts since 2016 unearthed a number of offensive comments. About Muslims, she wrote: “Islam is becoming a hotbed of infection for humanity” and about the victim of police brutality, George Floyd, she described him as “a drug addict swindler”.

Karla apologized for the posts, saying, “I want to acknowledge the conversation that has broken out between my prior social media posts.” I am deeply sorry for those I have caused pain because I am a member of a marginalized community and am aware of this suffering. I have fought tirelessly for a better world all my life. I think light always outshines darkness.

The Oscars ceremony takes place on March 1. The film leads the pack with 13 nominations, the most ever for a foreign language film. It was expected to be Netflix’s first win at the awards, before this drama. It won the best film award at Cannes last year, and Karla won the best actress award. Karla’s role in the movie reportedly earned her around £85, 000.

Responded to the controversy around her co-star at a Q&amp, A event for the film in London, Zoe said: “It makes me really sad because I don’t support]it], and I don’t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group. I can only avow the interaction I had with each and every person who was a part of this movie and how inclusive and collaborative and racial, cultural, and gender equity was at the heart of my experience and interactions with them. And I’m just depressed by it.
